Assessment and Results
Assessment
At Crowton Christ Church C.E. Primary School, effective assessment is central to high-quality teaching and learning. Assessment enables teachers to identify pupils' current understanding, inform next steps in learning and ensure that every child is supported to achieve their full potential. Assessment is used to celebrate success, identify barriers to learning and provide appropriate support and challenge for all pupils.
Day-to-Day (Formative) Assessment
Teachers make continuous assessments of learning through a range of strategies, including:
- skilful questioning and classroom discussion
- observation of pupils during lessons and learning activities
- review of pupils' work, including marking and feedback
- quizzes, retrieval activities and knowledge checks
- self-assessment and peer assessment opportunities
This ongoing formative assessment allows teachers to adapt teaching, address misconceptions quickly and provide appropriate support or extension.
Termly and End of Year (Summative) Assessment
Throughout the year, pupils' attainment is assessed through teacher assessment and a range of standardised and curriculum-based assessments. Formal assessment weeks take place each term, enabling teachers and leaders to monitor attainment and progress across the curriculum.
Children are assessed as:
Developing – working towards the expected standard for their year group
Secure – meeting the expected standard for their year group
Greater Depth – working beyond the expected standard and demonstrating deeper understanding
Assessment information is shared with parents through parents' evenings and annual reports.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
In Reception, children are assessed against the Early Learning Goals (ELGs) within the EYFS Framework. Within the first six weeks of starting school, children complete the statutory Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA). Ongoing observations and assessment inform planning and support children's development throughout the year.
At the end of Reception, children are assessed as:
Emerging – working towards the expected level of development
Expected – meeting the expected level of development
The EYFS Profile provides information to support a smooth transition into Key Stage 1.
National Statutory Assessments
We administer all statutory assessments required by the Department for Education, including:
- Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA) in the first six weeks of Reception
- Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
- Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check
- End of Key Stage 2 SATs in Year 6
- Early Years Foundation Stage Profile at the end of Reception
These assessments provide a national benchmark and help us evaluate the effectiveness of our curriculum and provision.
Using Assessment to Support Progress
Assessment information is reviewed regularly by teachers, subject leaders and senior leaders to:
- identify strengths and areas for development
- inform future planning and teaching
- provide targeted intervention and support where required
- monitor the progress of individuals, groups and cohorts
- ensure all pupils make strong progress from their starting points
Our assessment systems support our commitment to high expectations, inclusion and continuous improvement for every child.
School Performance Information
Performance information for Crowton Christ Church C.E. Primary School can be viewed via the Department for Education's school performance tables: https://www.compare-school-performance.service.gov.uk/
As a small school, cohort sizes can vary considerably from year to year, meaning that the performance of individual pupils may have a significant effect on published outcomes. National comparisons provide a helpful point of reference; however, they should be interpreted alongside pupils' starting points, individual circumstances and the progress they make over time. School performance data represents just one measure of success and sits alongside a much wider range of evidence about pupils' achievement, wellbeing and personal development.
