Curriculum
The National Curriculum for schools in England is set down by the Department of Education and is statutory for every child attending a LA primary school. At Crowton Christ Church CE Primary School children are taught English and Mathematics everyday as high standards in these enable children to participate fully in school and set them up for wider choices in life. We teach these through discrete lessons and when possible through a thematic approach.
As some of our classes are taught in mixed ages some areas are taught over a 2 year rolling programme. Themes are planned to ensure coverage of RE, Science, History, Geography, Computing, Art and Design, Music, PE and PHSE (Personal, Health and Social Education). Some PE is taught by specialist teachers. Modern Foreign Languages are taught in KS2.
We follow a systematic teaching of phonics mainly using Little Wandle. This ensures children learn the skills needed to decode words effectively. We start teaching phonics as soon as the children join us in Reception and continue until the end of Year 2.
In using themes teachers support children in making connections in their learning. Teachers plan from the National Curriculum and make lessons fun and interactive developing pupils problem solving skills, collaborative working and self resilience. Personalised and group targets and objectives are used to encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own learning. Please see your childs class teacher if you have any questions about the NC or the areas being taught currently in that class. Subject policies are available in school and on the policies section of our website. The Age related expectations for each year group can be seen in on our website as well as the topic plans for each class.
Our school has an open door policy and we will gladly meet with any parents who wish to know more about the curriculum we teach or how they can best enhance their childs own learning.
