Owls Class 2 2022 - 2023
Miss Russon
Welcome to Owl Class; the home of Year 3 and 4!
Welcome back Class 2! I hope everyone has had a super half term break and is ready to learn again. This year, staff that will be working with Owls are Miss Russon, Miss Bettley and George Waring (PE lessons.)
We have a busy few terms ahead. Our texts that we will be looking at are ‘When the giant stirred’ and ‘This morning I met a whale.’ We will also be working hard on our length and perimeter skills at in maths at the start of this term.
‘Science week’ is just around the corner! This will be a week filled with science assemblies, demonstrations, investigative work, a homework challenge task, live lessons and more. The fun begins on the 10th of March!
Spellings- Weekly spellings will be given to years 3 and 4 to learn for homework. These will be given out on a Thursday and tested the following Thursday. Please also make every effort to support your child in learning their times tables up to 12 x 12 also. Quick recall will make other aspects of maths much easier! Year 4 will have the times tables check in the Summer term also.
Reading- All children should be bringing home a reading book on a regular basis. For homework, every child should be aiming to read for 10-15 minutes (average) per night. Children have the opportunity to change their books regularly in school. If you are unsure what book band your child is currently reading through, please let me know and I can remind them/let you know which level they are reading at. At school, children take part in guided reading activities several times a week. These involve answering comprehension questions, taking part in discussions about a text and reading out loud with intonation. Discussing a book with your child assists with the understanding of a text and can be valuable in raising levels of achievement. A note/signature in your child’s reading record is much appreciated to help us keep track of reading at home.
Strategies to help your child with reading-
- Read aloud with your child
- Discuss the story
- Discuss any words or phrases that they have not understood
- Visualise the story
- Predict what will happen next
PE- PE will be taught on a Monday afternoon (George Waring). Please ensure that your child is in the correct kit.
Homework- Each week, alongside spellings and reading, children will be given maths or English homework to complete in their home learning book. This will be set on a Friday and due in the following Wednesday. Often this will include times tables practice using TTRockstars or a game to play at home.
If you have any questions/queries then please feel free to call in to school to see me. I will always reply to emails as soon as possible and encourage parents to chat to me at the school gate.
I look forward to the Spring term with your children.
Kind regards,
Miss Russon 😊
