Class 4 Overview

Welcome back Class 4.

Welcome back everyone! I hope that you have had an enjoyable Christmas break. Adults who will be working with year 5/6-

Miss Russon, Mrs Martin and Margi (PE).

We have a busy term ahead. For Year 6, it is very important that they attend every revision club up until May as we will be addressing our personal targets each week.

The Spring term- Our main topics for the term are ‘Refugees’ and ‘Light.’

We will enjoy topic days that surround these and other areas this term.

Spellings- Weekly spellings will be given to year 5/6 to learn for homework. These will be given out on a Monday and tested the following Monday.

Times tables- Please also make every effort to support your child in learning their times tables up to 12 x 12. Quick recall will make other aspects of maths much easier! We practice these using our 12 x 12 grids and the quicker we can complete them, the faster our mental arithmetic will become!

Reading- All children should be bringing home a reading book on a regular basis. For homework, every child should be aiming to read for 15/20 minutes (average) per night. Children have the opportunity to change their books regularly in school. At school, children take part in guided reading activities every day. These involve answering comprehension questions, discussion about a text and reading out loud with intonation. Discussing a book with your child assists with the understanding of a text, and can be valuable in raising levels of achievement. A note/signature in your child’s reading record is much appreciated to help us keep track of reading at home. We also have quiet reading and then bookmark question time daily, and enjoy a class story box.

Strategies to help your child with reading-

Read aloud with your child

Discuss the story

Discuss any words or phrases that they have not understood

Visualise the story

Predict what will happen next

Parent/grandparent helpers- We are always grateful for any offers of help in the classroom, either on a regular basis or as a one off. If you would like to spend some time with the class assisting with readers, arts/craft activities or general support then please let us know.

If you have any questions/queries then please feel free to call in to school to see me. We have a jam packed year ahead with lots of topic weeks and creative sessions. If you are unsure of a date or an activity, please contact me and I will clarify any misconceptions. I will endeavour to always keep you up to date with our class news and projects.
