Owls Class 2 2022 - 2023

Miss Dempsey

Welcome to Owl Class; the home of Year 3 and 4!

To start off the Autumn Term, we will be focusing on the topic of ‘Stone Age’. As historians, we will be going back in time, to when the world was different and our ancestors lived in a world without cars, mobile phones and computers. We will learn how people of the past lived in an ever-changing landscape, when the world of human beings was new and intertwined with our environment.

In English, our writing will be inspired by two high-quality texts, ‘Gorilla’ by Anthony Browne and ‘Leon and The Place Between’ by Graham Baker-Smith.

In Shared Reading, we will be exploring 'Ice Palace' and 'The Train to Impossible Places'.

As scientists, we will be investigating 'Living things and their habitats'. We will group living things in a variety of ways. We will explore and classify to help group, identify and name a variety of living things in our local and wider environment. We will explore different environments and how they can change over time and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things.

In RE, we will be considering the different stories about Jesus' birth, looking closely at the differences and similarities.

Owl’s PE Sessions

This year PE will be on a Monday afternoon and swimming will be on a Wednesday afternoon.

Home Learning

Spellings and reading every night please, as a minimum.

All children should be bringing their reading book and reading record home on regular basis. Pupils should be aiming to read for 15/20 minutes at home. In school pupils have the opportunity to change their books as required. Year 3 and Year 4 will take part in guided reading activities daily developing their comprehension skills and build on their inference.

On Thursday new spellings will be introduced and then sent home in their spelling book, so they can be practiced and learnt at home, these are then quizzed on the following Thursday before new words are set.

Times Tables

In Maths, all pupils will practise their times tables for 15 minutes. Recalling times tables improves memory skills, which is a transferrable skill that will help pupils solve maths problems and support their mental arithmetic development.

End of Year 3 Expectations: All Pupils should be confident in their 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 8x, 10x tables.

End of Year 4 Expectations: All pupils should be confident in all times tables up to 12 x 12.
